A genetically modified food labeling bill, H.722 has recently been introduced in Vermont. This bill would require labeling of foods containing genetically engineered ingredients.
GMO food products would also NOT be able to use advertising or promotional materials that imply the food is “natural”, “naturally-made”, “naturally grown” or “all natural”.
Unfortunately, if passed, this will not take effect until 2014. (so we will need to be diligent about checking GMO food lists to be sure we aren’t buying products that contain genetically engineered ingredients)
California, Michigan and Washington are also working on ballot initiatives to get mandatory labeling of genetically modified (GM) foods. Hopefully these states (and others) will follow Vermont’s example and also pass legislation to end phony “all natural” claims for foods that contain these unnatural, GMOs.
Since 85% of shoppers will not buy foods they know are genetically modified, labeling will help eliminate GMOs from the marketplace just like in Europe.
Monsanto and other biotech companies have filled store shelves with their GMO foods. And misuse of the “all natural” label has made it more difficult for the American consumer to know what foods are really GMO free. We buy natural foods thinking they are good for us when in fact many are filled with GMO ingredients.
According to a 2010 Hartman Group poll, more than 60 percent of consumers believe that the “all-natural” label implies the absence of GM ingredients, but that is not true. In fact, at the current time, the ONLY label that you can trust is the USDA 100% Organic label.
Here are a few “natural” products to add to your list of genetically modified foods that were found to contain 100% genetically modified grains: Kashi, GoLean, Mother’s, Nutritious Living, General Mills Kix, Bumpers, Hi-Lo.

More GMO News:
Lawsuits accusing food manufacturers of deceptive and misleading practices over their “all natural” claims are beginning to appear in the latest GMO news. Here are just a couple of examples:
- Frito-Lay is being sued by a New York consumer over their ‘all natural’ snacks that are actually made using GM ingredients, such as Tostitos and SunChips.
- In August of 2011, a class action lawsuit was filed against Kellogg/Kashi® for allegedly misleading consumers with its “natural” claims. One Kashi® product in particular, GoLean® Shakes, is composed almost entirely of synthetic and unnaturally processed ingredients, according to the plaintiff.
There are also bills, such as Michigan’s Senate Bill 777, that would prevent anti-GMO laws, and would remove “any authority local governments may have to adopt and enforce ordinances that prohibit or regulate the labeling, sale, storage, transportation, distribution, use, or planting of agricultural, vegetable, flower or forest tree seeds.”
Currently, at least 14 states have passed this type of legislation and if this continues it will become harder and harder to eliminate GMOs from our food supply. So the need for mandatory labeling of GMO foods becomes that much more important.
In 2007, then-Presidential candidate Obama promised to “immediately” require GM labeling if elected. This hasn’t happened and is LONG overdue! Watch video for his statement:
If you are unfamiliar with what are genetically modified foods, you aren’t alone. Many Americans still ask “What is GMO?” and aren’t aware of how serious the health implications are.
If you’d like to know the facts about GMOs in our foods see this great video report by Dr. Joseph Mercola:
Here’s just a small page excerpt:
“Studies link genetically modified organisms (GMOs) with toxins, allergies, infertility, infant mortality, immune dysfunction, stunted growth, accelerated aging, and death. Whistleblowers were fired, threatened, and gagged. Warnings by FDA scientists were ignored.
Expert Jeffrey M. Smith, author of Seeds of Deception, presents the evidence that these gene-spliced crops may lead to health and environmental catastrophes.”
